Gary Visser SRC Reflections
Michael gave me one of the early 531 tube frames that was slightly too small for me, (23 1/2”?) I was in team livery and they stuck the Micheal’s sticker between the shifter levers, like the one in the picture. Greg D got it after me, he called it the lead sled, but I remember chrome fork ends, so this may not be the bike.
I got the first Reynolds 753 frame next, was 24” (62cm?) and a much better fit, I believe it was made for Raleigh/Carlton by Jan LeGrand in Holland made all the European team frames (sketchy memory of that) and was also painted in team livery. That was one hell of a bike and I rode it two seasons in competition and at Olympic trials in Saranac Lake. I used my own wheels, liked it better with the low flange campy hubs, may have been my imagination but the wheels had gold Mavic rims and galvanized spokes that didn’t rattle loose like the chrome ones. I still have that wheel set with tires.
I TT’d on a set of Phil Wood hubs, low front and a collectors item: high/low rear hub. The freewheel side was high flange the left side low. Ron Ritz built the wheel for me, three cross on drive side, two cross on left. Front was radial. Sold that set, mistake as bet collectors want that hub set bad. Photo at Chicago Mich/Bul criterium my last season, sold my van and could fit frame on rear trunk rack and two sets of wheels in rear trunk of the 914.
